KASTEL at the KIT Open Day
On Saturday, June 19, KASTEL Security Research Labs together with StartUpSecure KASTEL gave the interested public an insight into the world of IT security at the KIT Open Day.
Data retention is a big issue at the moment. How can we ensure that the private rights of citizens are protected in the case of online surveillance by law enforcement authorities? This question was discussed by experts at the first 'KASTEL controversial' panel discussion. KASTEL Security Research Labs was the host of the event on the topic of privacy protection in surveillance on 21 November 2024 at the IHK Karlsruhe.
The position of law enforcement was represented by Tomke Beddies, head of the Cybercrime Centre Karlsruhe, which was founded in 2024. She sees the legal basis as an opportunity to create a balance between security and freedom.
For Dr Jan Wacke, Deputy Data Protection Commissioner of Baden-Württemberg, security for citizens lies in the instruments of data protection.
Net activist Manuel Atug pointed out the social aspects of the issue. He said that the public must actively approach politicians and help shape policy.
Prof. Jörn Müller-Quade, spokesman for the KASTEL Security Research Labs, showed how technical methods for protecting privacy can create trust among people.
